Congressman John Lewis

Congressman Lewis and me in November 2016 while the congressman was in Nashville to accept an award from the Nashville Public Library Foundation.

Congressman John Lewis was and always will be one of my heroes. I met him in the late 1960s while I was a student at Tennessee State University. I wrote about him from time to time after I went to work in 1971 at The Tennessean. While heading the Voter Education Project, based in Atlanta, Congressman Lewis introduced me to Julian Bond and also Gov. Jimmy Carter of Georgia. We remained good friends after he was elected to Congress in 1986. I admire the work he did during his lifetime, sometimes even putting his life on the line.
Here is an audio excerpt from a 1998 interview I had with Congressman Lewis shortly after his publication of Walking With The Wind: A Memoir of the Movement.
